The latest: US judge warns Google that major changes will be enforced in the case of Illegal Play Store Monopoly -

Aug 29, 2024

U.S. District Judge James Donato has advised Google that big adjustments are slated to be made to its Android app store following an appeals court ruled that there was a monopoly in the Play Store. Play Store operates as a monopoly that is illegal.

It is reported by the Associated Press reports that Judge Donato has suggested that he may demand Google to allow different stores for apps running that run on Android devices. This is a step that aims to reduce Google's power over app distribution and its billing system on its platform. This monopoly with "nearly complete control" generates billions annually for Google however, the court's decision could disrupt the system, with Google anticipating costs of as high as 600 million dollars.

Google is concerned about the potential of opening the Play Store to third-party app stores, which could expose users to security issues, which could lead to the issue that Google refers to as "security disorder. " However, the judge Donato highlighted the necessity to make a major change saying "We will take down the barriers and that's what's happening."

This is part of a broader antitrust push against Google and one of the major cases involving its Google search engine due to be launched in September. The judges are hoping to issue an order outlining the necessary modifications required for Google's Play Store shortly, and possibly in the days before Labor Day.

An article in The Verge on the same issue provides a list of Epic Games benefiting from these results, and also an introduction to the article that states "Judge James Donato will issue his decision on the conditions Google provides -- and Epic will receive it in a matter days."
