The Code Company founder Ben May talks at an industrial function (c) thecode.co
The Code Company, a specialization agency focused on the digital publishing industry, is one of 's top partners. They're WordPress experts , and are involved in massive overhauls, including migrations and integrations. creating hundreds of tech stacks for thousands of authors.
The company has recently launched Substack enormous The Dispatch, a publication that offers news and analyses about politics, policy and culture worth $1.9 million and with many hundreds of customers. I spoke to Stacey Astley Clark, in the communications and partnerships team about the company as well as its offerings:
"Our chief executive Ben May has been using technology to tackle problems since grade 10" starts Stacey. "He developed his first site for a local business at the age of 12, and was paid 400 dollars." Ben saw an increasing opportunity for potential profession from all that, so he launched his very first agency at young age of.
Code Company Code Company didn't intend to get involved in publishing. However, it did gain a few publishing customers at first. Stacey states: "We've carved out a market for building technologies for digital publishers as well as switching from various platforms to WordPress and establishing membership options, and ad tech. The initial plan was to be platform neutral, but then realized that many platforms didn't work! Nowadays, we utilize WordPress Additionally, there were several "rescue operation that were a result of other platforms."
"The essential engineering aspects which are used in the creation of publishing websites is what we do," Stacey continues. We assist publishers in resolving complex issues with WordPress and discover ways to use technology to "increase their revenue, create greater efficiency in their businesses and decrease the risk associated using technology in the businesses".
Stacey and I are in the view that technology has become less technological This is critical for publishing. "Sometimes you'll find journalists, content creators as well as marketers who use technology and need to utilize technology, without calling an engineer every five minutes. These are "wordspeople" and not "tech folks'."
Code Company assists those who need to develop their own tech stacks. Code Company helps these people create or move to technology platforms that will make them independent "They need a technology which is capable to perform the same tasks like before, but in a much more streamlined way. We often work with publishers who have sites that are struggling with debt from technology. A plugin may not give users everything they require Therefore, we believe it's more effective to develop an integration that is custom, which means you get all the features that they require, but none of things they do not need."
Customers
The Code Company works with content companies of all sorts that span from small-scale media companies to big entertainment corporations. They recently announced the highly-publicized launch of Wondermind the content hub to help people with mental health issues that is backed by the famous Selena Gomez and Newsette CEO Daniella Pierson. In the wake of the launch Bhavik Trivedi, Chief Operations Chief Officer of Wondermind stated: "I've never had a flawless launch. Until now. It was launched and was adjusted to handle spikes in traffic and our various integrations performed flawlessly."

They also collaborate with Nine which is the largest entertainment business in Australia. "We developed their corporate website along with publications drive.com.au which is a top automobile websites, and Future Women which is a membership site designed for professional women." Code Company also launched the Code Company also launched eBay's local ads website. "That was an important event as they'd never had regional leads before , and then they were able to get Australian leads through this website," Stacey confirms. "We recently built a new website called Science Alert, which is a leading science publication within the US. The website is operated by Australia and the rest of its audience is in the US. The idea was in the making for an entire year!" She recalls.
It seems that the firm's most effective fit would be with publishers that are a small and looking to scale. "We want to know, 'How do show that you're able to publish? What can we do to get your company and the tech stack into the best shape so that you can expand your business?'" Stacey states. This is probably where the majority of clients of The Cod Co are located; for instance, non-traditional media outlets like news website Crikey and Her Campus, the media for female students at college organization based within the US (that The Code Company moved to Drupal to WordPress).

"We assist creative and ingenuous creators that are frustrated or stuck by their existing platform or CMS (content management system)," Stacey adds. "They're seeking us out to find alternatives as they realize that the system they're currently using has limitations on what it are able to do. The platform doesn't have a lot of flexibility and it takes up a significant portion of their revenue." Furthermore, it's becoming increasingly important for creators at any level to gather first-party information. "They're only able to obtain that information through platforms such as Substack. We're creating custom creator stacks that let users to choose their own audiences," she explains.
Solutions and Services
The customers of the Code Company could be the ones who built their website themselves or asked for help from someone to design it for them. Whatever the case they're making use of a variety of plugins. "As they've progressed, things begin to go wrong and they're unable to fix the issues themselves. This is causing issues, as well as complaints from customers, and they can't accomplish what they would like to accomplish. It's not always as simple as adding something new to the menu." She confirms.
Mike McPhate at the California Sun confirms: "The biggest problem with my previous membership website was the fact that it was full with inconsistencies and confusing instructions regarding how to use the site. I'd get emails almost every single day from dissatisfied users. Since the time I designed the website in conjunction and The Code Company and , I'm no longer receiving those mails from my readers, and that's great!"

We all know that performance is an important factor for publishing companies "If there is a drop in their performance, they may suffer huge losses," Stacey continues. "And they're constantly playing around with one plugin while focusing on the next. The performance of their site is constantly declining until their business just isn't efficient anymore. In the end, they'll be joining us with this enormous tech stack that's creaking and they're conscious that they could risk their site going out of commission due to poor performance."
Publishers are increasingly looking to diversify their revenue streams This is the reason why many are considering subscriptions and memberships. "We have to figure out the ideal method to ensure it is safe and reliable. A large part of our task is researching the tools that are going to be life-changing for publishers," she says. The Code Company works specifically with the idea of membership in order to avoid the what Stacey refers to as "leaky paying walls". Stacey explains: "We've worked with other membership solutions before and was able to easily bypass the paywall. If your model of business is based on publishing, and relies on paying content, this can be a huge issue."
New projects and events in the near future
"The marketplace for creators has grown exponentially," Stacey notes. "Creators are realizing SaaS platforms have limits, and they're looking to look at alternatives. The necessity for diversification is not going out of the window for publishers. However, the necessity to constantly look at different ways of engaging audiences with more personalized and relevant information. Subscriptions do more than just bring in revenue, they can also be a way to connect with audiences also, thus increasing their engagement."
"There are still printed newspapers that aren't fully digital, and we're still getting interest from those that realize that, in order to become successful the competition, they'll need to change into digital and subscriptions would be a part of it."
As for recent activities "Ben is well-known at conferences," adds Stacey. Recently, Ben spoke at the Mumbrella event for publishers in Australia, and WordCamp US in San Diego. The topics he spoke about were the concept of the creator economy. He focused on the minimalist publishers' and ways to do more using less. This includes taking lessons from creators for bigger publishing organizations as well as, in some cases using membership programs.

It seems that the person who founded the business is aware of the business inside and out. "Ben's been doing this all his life and there's not a single query he's not able of answering," says Stacey. "The comments I receive from discussions with clients is that, if they encounter problems, they could have to pay another agency for two weeks to visit and investigate. The Code Company's tech team is able to resolve issues within a matter of minutes by phone because he's encountered each issue. It's a great thing for companies to be able to conduct that type problem-solving."
In closing, Stacey says: "Publishing or managing a site does not take as much work as people imagine it to be. It's all about simple." We recognize that it's very easy to become lost in new technology, themes, or plugins "these flashing lights aren't equipped with any potential to shift the needle even a bit," she smiles.
The Code Company revels in "smart simplicities" it appears. Stacey states: "We offer the chance to connect with a tech business that will help with achieving the desired results, but in the most straightforward way which is efficient, and not using any buzzwords of the moment."
