New Update Apple Updates App Store Link-Out Guidelines in accordance with EU DMA. But the fees remain high.
Apple has updated its App Store's regulations to make it more compatible with the Europe's Digital Markets Act (DMA) But the fees associated with Apple's revisions remain substantial according to an article published in The Verge.
The significant changes are explained in the form of six bullets on the Apple News and Updates page, and visitors are asked to go to an even more thorough guide to the changes in their developer documentation.
A few highlights include advertising "offers to buy products at a destination of their choice," developers being able to "use an actionable link that can be tapped, clicked or even scanned for users to get to their destination," and that "Updated commercial terms for apps which use the External Purchase Link Entitlement feature" are currently being implemented to be in line with changes that have been made to these features."
Changes will take effect "this autumn" (no more specific start date has been established).
"Nearly-Endless 20 Percent Fee for Developers'
As per the story in The Verge, "Apple offers a nearly inexhaustible 20 percent fee to developers with the latest EU update," the updates appear to provide developers with more options for linking to buying options that are not available via Apple's App Store.
The expenses associated with the new feature are so costly and restrictive that "it's impossible to imagine a person using the technology. "
The reason is that the developers that opt-in to the StoreKit External Purchase Link Entitlement (EU) Addendum, the cost of the addendum includes a five initial acquisition charge along with the 20% Store Services charge that is applicable for "sales of digital goods or services, on any platform during a predetermined 12-month period beginning at the point of install, including the updating of apps and reinstalls."
The Verge informs us that apps that update or reinstall by the user resets the timer to 12 months in the store's ongoing fees. There are a variety of other tools and programs that might lower the cost, for example the inclusion of support for third-party apps, charging some auto-renewing subscriptions which qualify, or having a developer account in Apple's small business program for small businesses. But, the annual fee of 12 months reset at update or reinstallation can render the fees "endless."
An earlier TechCrunch article titled "Apple revises DMA conformity to allow App Store link-outs using fewer limitations as in addition to the new fee structure" further clarifies some details of Apple's distinct terminology and fees. Both are traditional and modern. For example it states that"Store Services Fee" will be "Store Services Fee" will be "a 10 per cent standard commission, or a five discount commission (e.g. developer commissions for users who have enrolled in the App Store's Small-Business Program) in accordance with Apple's terms of service for businesses; or an average of 20%, or 7% discount offered under the terms of Apple's current contract."
The details on charges for as well as both those Alternate Terms Addendum to apps in the EU and for the StoreKit External Purchase Link Entitlement (EU) Addendum can be located within the Commissions section on this Apple support page.
