"Let's begin by defining the adjectives that are most appropriate to describe my art: strong, expressive and layered."

What was the process of transferring from architecture to mixed-media illustrations?

"When the moment came to choose the career path I was told, as numerous others, to not go after a career in art. and I was adamant. Then I graduated with a Bachelor and Master's Degree in Architecture and being utterly bored of the work in the front of a computer. Then during my gap year at university, I decided creating illustrations, artworks as well as products that had my design on them which made me feel more content!

The whole thing took off before I got a job in an architecture office, which I currently manage with my illustration career and my ongoing studies in the field of art historical studies. I'm hoping to get rid of the corporate architecture job quickly enough to focus completely on what I enjoy doing as well as using mixed-media methods.

I hope my story helps those who are unsure of the best course of study. I hope it helps you realize that the art degree is not important, you could be an artist from every background. And the most important thing is, this will create a unique art. Of course, attending an art institute must be a fantastic experience as well!"

What would you say about your style of illustration?

"I think describing your own style is something extremely difficult. I was forced to talk to my friends about this one and what they said about the style couldn't be more precise. The way they described my work is like everything I paint is moving like the wind is blowing through the painting and dropping color all the things it touches. It's impossible to find a better way to describe the effect honestly.

I love layering textures as well as exploring a variety of colors. I'm a maximalist in that sense. The harder I try to limit a palette of colors and the more expansive the spectrum of color gets.

In a glance at some of my subject options, some of my most favorite subjects to draw are landscapes that feature mountains and oceans, because it brings me back to my childhood home in Tenerife is a charming little island situated in the Atlantic ocean.

But I will also draw human-like figures with over-the-top features and vibrant skin. Also, of course, I will always incorporate an architectural component - those 6 years of architecture studies must be represented somewhere."

What's the secret to making your mixed-media illustrations?

"I believe that the key in my art is to not plan too much beforehand. In reality, this approach can be successful but it can also fail, but not worrying too much about the outcome really gives you the freedom to explore your art.

I love watching how I color and making decisions and changing my minds in my final pieces. The work reveals my connection to the paper, my context, and to my paint and you will see my process of decision-making in the finished result.

I enjoy being able get my hands dirty and mix my personal paints. All you require to be able to recreate my artwork is a variety of different substances (doesn't need to be anything expensive, but I enjoy mixing media), a very loose hand and a willingness to apply paint layers and begin at the beginning."
