We're proud of our 20-year history of serving as a platform for entrepreneurs and small businesses everywhere to stand out and be successful. The Marcy Lab School is an organization that is non-profit and located in Brooklyn, New York, which aims to offer an extraordinary postsecondary education experience to aid students to gain profitable and rewarding job opportunities in the tech sector.
We gave $100,000 to the Marcy Lab School as a part of our 2020 commitment to assist organizations in eradicating racial disparities.
We talked to The Marcy Lab School's executive director, Reuben Ogbonna II, about the ways The Marcy Lab School is providing opportunities for Fellows to find their strengths and jobs in the field of technology that require no needing a four-year degree from a college.
: Marcy Lab is a relatively new company, so why did you choose to create this non-profit?
Reuben Ogbonna II: After spending 14 years serving students of color--along with my co-founder Maya Bhattacharjee-Marcantonio--in the charter and public school systems, we repeatedly watched as our former students with limitless potential slipped through the cracks of higher education. One of the stories we rarely hear about the college experience in the United States is that each year a ton of really capable, hardworking and talented students are accepted to the university they've always dreamed of but aren't able pay for it or even make it through graduation. We were astonished at the low success rate of "college promises" that left our students as well as their families with financial ruin and with other unsolvable challenges.
The Marcy Lab School was founded by us and manage Marcy Lab out of the conviction that children from our society who are of color, and in fact all children, deserve a better, more equitable pathway to the freedoms and possibilities that were only available to those who been through a 4-year college. Marcy Lab School Marcy Lab School offers a alternative for postsecondary education which was redesigned and established upon our initial goal of ensuring that there is a lifetime opportunities for economic mobility and choices students interested in the life-changing professions of technological advancement.
SQSP is described as a viable alternative for a college degree that is four years long for fellow students. What's the main reason why it's vital to be aware that Marcy Lab is the only place to go Marcy Lab offers this path towards job?
ROThe issues I watched my children confront on the spot were among the top barriers facing students of color. It became clear that the postsecondary systems in our country didn't live up to the expectations of college that most young people seek: the community of a college, academic support and the capacity to be aligned with not only the job, but also a profession. It's the deliberate blend of these factors that make up the foundation of Marcy Lab and are some important factors that give young adults confidence in choosing a different option.
In order to fulfill our new promise in order to fulfill our new promise, we will ensure that Fellows have the skills for working in our 12 month program, prepared with the skills to integrate into team environments that are fast-paced and provide value on the initial day. The Fellows acquire technical expertise through completing a curriculum aligned to industry that is adaptive and responsive to ever-changing demands of the tech industry. Apart from gaining an extensive technical foundation, our fellows take part of our Leadership & Development curriculum, that focuses on racial identity, gender equality, career readiness, as well as financial literacy, with the works of renowned authors such as James Baldwin, Michelle Alexander, Safiya Umoja Noble, and Dr. Beverly Tatum.
We're extremely proud to announce the Marcy Lab School graduates are looking for and landing lucrative positions which typically are only accessible to students from four-year institutions which are highly competitive. This has two benefits. One is that we have the students we've taught and their families have been propelled into positions that provide security and financial stability. Secondly, it also shows how companies change their hiring methods to accept, encourage those who aren't traditional.
SQSP: Could you tell us a little more about the effects you've seen Marcy Lab School's impact Marcy Lab School have on the students that attend the school?
ROEven at the end of five years of working in this field, I have obvious to me how exciting it is to see our amazing youngsters get jobs that provide an average of $188,000 per year in pay at the age of 19 and 20 at many of the most successful corporations around the globe with zero loans. The youngsters are contributing to teams from companies including The New York Times, JPMorgan, Cockroach Labs, Spotify as well as many more, increasing their earning on average by nearly $75,000 in a single year. They also allow their companies to give back to the local community by purchasing homes, contributing to their families businesses, and assisting their families.
However, even before our Fellows break into the industry and enter in the workforce, we watch how they change, learn and become more confident as individuals performing more than they've before to accomplish their goals, and developing the belief that they can add value to each room they enter. Each day, they become ever more interested and eager to make change beyond the confines of Marcy and, ultimately, their work environments. They work alongside their teachers and each other that they keep their minds on the fact that their talents, skills and capabilities will allow individuals to break down outdated systems of injustice and eventually using their experience and knowledge to formulate strategies to benefit society and for the social transformation.
SQSP: What's the role that tech play in achieving the Marcy Lab program and its co-participants as both subjects and in running the program?
ROOur technical program's effectiveness is based on our symbiotic relationship with our partner organizations from the employer side for the purpose of establishing an ongoing feedback loop about our Fellows' technical and job-ready. Relevant areas for improvement go straight back to our instructional team, so that our course is able to evolve and alter according to the needs of hiring as well as on-the-job performances.
The alignment of curriculum and student performance has resulted in greater hiring agreements with employers which recognize the fact that these relationships can result in better or more equal hiring results. Some highlights include:
We directly work with established businesses to remove any degree requirement for hiring software engineers. They include The New York Times and . They also employed our Fellows and other non-traditional talents.
The development of a brand new Capstone program curriculum in conjunction together and J.P. Morgan Chase Asset and Wealth Management who has a specialization in backend data engineering course for our capstone year to fulfill their demands and help prepare our Fellows to take on the ever-growing growth within the area of analysis based on information.
SQSP What are the goals you have in the near future of Marcy Lab School?
RO:What has made me be optimistic about the future of Marcy Lab and the future of the places we work in are the developments taking place in the business world, with firms shifting away from degree requirements to hire on the basis of capabilities that have allowed organisations like Marcy Lab to even exist.
I am seeing major employers all over the nation such as IBM and Barclays and even a few partners similar to that I am employed by and a large quantity of mid-career and beginning career and senior executives who came from the Marcy Lab School, similar to Stanford's pipeline for firms in San Francisco's Bay Area. As they gain experience and expertise at these top companies I am seeing our graduates eventually branching off to start their own ventures and transfer their experience by forming teams who have similar backgrounds to their colleagues.
The bottom line is that I view Marcy Lab as a part of a wider network of development paths that are equitable specifically designed to help propel thousands of high-performing students with a diverse background into jobs which break the vicious cycle of poverty within a single generation.
