Alternate text, commonly called alt text is a short written text that has a meaning which can aid users in understanding what the significance of pictures, images, GIF, or other graphic elements found on websites. It can be picked up by assistive devices as well as when images fail to load (due to bandwidth limitations or any other reason, for instance).
