Filmmaker Mayumi Yoshida is forging her own path in her unique account

Jul 15, 2023

Mayumi Yoshida may be, being recognized for her work in filmmaking, but it's fascinating to hear her speak about the background where she started her journey in the field of filmmaking through fate. "I started my career as an actor" declares Mayumi. "There were a shortage of roles to choose from and there wasn't a lot of characters that I thoroughly enjoyed at the core of my heart which caused me to feel"Oh that's me.'" If the opportunity came up to get funding for the film that was short in length, Mayumi had the opportunity to not simply perform as an actor a character, but become the director - a deeply personal account of her life.

"That led to a variety of film festivals"" According to Mayumi. "It led me to think"Oh it's possible that I could be a storyteller, as a filmmaker rather than simply being an actor." Since then, Mayumi has continued to develop her film career as well as collaborating with artist Amanda Sum on artful music videos that test expectations and challenge the style of the genre.

"The greatest advice I've ever received from someone who was not me was the one who advised me to be confident of my talents," says Mayumi. That means accepting the work she does regardless of doubts about it. "Don't avoid refusing to be a victim to yourself," she adds. "You may feel like"Oh, it's too far for a change. Oh, but I won't get in. However, this is unlikely to occur. No one has yet mentioned this. It's already been said. Relax. Do the shot and be astonished. The shot is usually successful. out."

We had a chance to talk with Mayumi prior to the debut of the film she picked with her staff "Different from before" was awarded the Jury Award for Best Music Video during 2023's SXSW festival. Check out the highlights of our conversation below and listen to the entire interview.

What are subjects that you'll be returning to during your job?

Mayumi the subjects I usually investigate in my films are seeking a sense of identity. Likewise, families are the focus. It seems that a major portion of my movies stem from family ties, therefore family dynamics or among different generational, cultural or issues of cross-cultural concern can be related to my type of thing.

How can you persevere?

Mayumi The greatest thing I love about films is the fact that it is alive throughout the years. The story you write to make the film is a capsule, and then it'll continue to live throughout the years, since they continue to play even in absence of your. There are a number of films that were made in the past that have a direct impact on my day-to-day living. If I was a vehicle for stories that would live for eternity, this became one of my goals following the creation of films I adored. I was thinking to myself "Ooh, there's something more. This goes beyond posting the things I'm in love with."

Let us know your thoughts about your experience with the Staff Pick experience.

Mayumi The experience was an absolute blast. It really was a huge hit with all of us, because the film was a significant political message that we desired to share it with greater audiences, not only since everyone who participated worked hard to make the film. It was due to the message that had to be delivered at the time in addition to. And we released it in the midst of Asian Heritage Month, so it was important that viewers saw and felt it. The staff on the other hand did their part in promoting that. I really appreciated that.

I had been very aware of Staff Picks. I was thinking "Oh this is a fascinating group of people." Then I thought "Oh what does it matter to me being a member of this group?" And then I'm thinking that there are just amazing people that get together. I'm honoured to be an integral part of this group.

What's next?

Mayumi  the next thing I must complete is the first film that is based on my brief film AKASHI. The journey has been long and I'm just content to shoot this. I'm very excited to present it at these really cool events - and to get to share it with others, in the future, someday.
