Digital illustration process - The CreativeMindClass Blog

If I am free, I love to complete 30 minutes- 1 hour studies or explorations where I just do whatever I feel like during the day. This has helped me grow, but it also helped find which things I was interested in.

These days I really like to pay attention to lighting, color and also how to describe things in a way that is simple so that I don't need to be too detailed with all of it. My preference is to draw my forms very close to the real world However, as time goes on, I want to try to make shapes move further and be more stylized with my art.

When I start a painting, usually I like laying out the basic shapes at first, whether in BW or straight in colors. When I believe it's important to start by drawing lines initially. When I've got a solid basis, I will map in the light shapes and shadows on layers. Not until then do I create or render the image generally moving from large to small particulars.

To create the Streets of London painting I used a similar process. To ensure neat edges and keep everything well-organized, I employed a large number of layers. Additionally, I had the main light on an additional layer.

Using layers also makes me less worried about making mistakes. However, once I feel comfortable in the state of my painting, I begin merging a few elements, but only keeping the things I consider essential.

Colours for me are very often a "feel" aspect, and I go with those that feel right. Also, I have a number of reference sources I consult to help me get the right colours, sometimes I blend references but others I use only the same.

It's definitely a good idea to be aware of color and light theory so that you are aware of what can do to make your general colour scheme and value more pronounced.

It's a bit difficult for me to define what the key to making my art... I simply like exploring diverse styles, techniques, and subjects and am in the spirit of other artists.

I'm still so early in my art journey and am very much still trying to determine who I am as an artist and my personal style. The main difference in my life is that I don't really worry about it nearly as much as I used to and I'm sure that's making a lot of difference.

My Background
