Becky Mollenkamp is a mindset coach who helps clients make the transition from  being a small business owner to CEO and create viable businesses that don't burn out. Through her Gutsy Boss brand, she has assisted thousands of customers let go of the 'shoulds to be successful' mindset and set the terms they prefer.

Over the course of nearly twenty years, Becky has gained experience as an entrepreneur -and even running an agency for content marketing that was six figures before launching her coaching business in 2015 -- Becky discovered what is effective best for her in terms of building an customer base.

Today, three principles drive Becky's marketing:

There's no need to be following the latest trends in social media.

Select long-term plans over immediate satisfaction

Make sure you are in harmony with your family and work to create a lasting business

It seems like a emerging trend in marketing pops on the scene every single day. It could lead to feeling overwhelmed and distracted from the things you need to focus on. Becky is making the conscious decision to focus more on the strategies and strategies that will work for her.

At the moment, this means moving away from social media sites that create more stress than they bring success.

"I am really reaching the bottom of my barrel in social media," she says. "I've quit Facebook, which feels fantastic. And Instagram, I'm not spending too much time there either."

Becky's principle of letting go of the 'shoulds is also applicable to social media. This is especially if you're trying to avoid doing too much at once.

"It just starts to feel like a lot. The next step is to make an account on TikTok first, then I'll have to design a separate reel... with a picture as well as video. I also have to have an idea that is thought-provoking in order to create a Twitter. Then I have to create something for Medium. This is too much." Becky describes.

"I feel we're getting to this point of overwhelming in our society and we are seeing people begin to realize that they need to change some thing.'"

Instead of making something completely new by scratch for every platform, find new ways to use the work you've already done. As an example, you could turn the YouTube video into shorter clips for TikTok and Instagram Reels, and the video transcript could be an element of a newsletter or blog article.

What is it like when you doown your audience? They communicate through a platform or channel which you are in control of, for example, an email newsletter, your online community, or website.

Here's how Becky discusses the importance of email in establishing your target audience.

2. Select long-term plans over immediate pleasure

After nearly two decades as an entrepreneur, Becky is aware of the strategies that are most effective for her. She is now using the same tried-and-true methods -- even if they require a bit longer to reap the benefits.

In the process of building your company It can be tempting to seek out strategies that will pay dividends fast. It's easy to feel discouraged when you don't see instant results, but the strategies that take more time and energy upfront usually will result in stronger, lasting connections with your audience.

The kind of work Becky is doing demands honesty and vulnerability from her clients. Therefore, they must be comfortable when they work with her prior to coaching. Consistent communication through her email newsletter helps establish that confidence.

"Before the individuals work one-on one with me, they generally are on my email list for 6 months or a one year period," the woman explains. "I'm regularly emailing them and for the clients to become acquainted with my personality. Some of them invest in something smaller, and then, after a long time, the clients who will be my personal clients finally invest [in coaching]."

The Gutsy Boss Podcast is yet another important element of Becky's long-game strategy. "That's took a while to pay off," says Becky. "I've been doing my podcast for four years, and I'm just beginning to see each month, I'm seeing an increase in the number of people who listen to my podcast."

SEO refers to making your website, content, and products easier for people to find through search engines. Optimized content shows up higher in the search results of appropriate keywords and phrases. If you can optimize your content, the more easy your targeted public to locate it in search.

Becky ran a content marketing agency prior to her transition into a coach, and SEO has stood the test of time across the course of her career.

"SEO is a tried and true strategy that works," she says. "SEO is a long game, however it's one that pays dividends. Instead of putting out something that only has an average shelf life of 2 minutes, SEO is an item that can go through the years."

Since she has optimized the content on her website and blog to meet the needs of her particular audience in mind, possible clients can discover Becky's content by searching. Once they do, the value she offers and her unique insight keep them reading, listening as well as subscribing to her newsletter and frequently becoming clients.

"I was the only one who could answer that question since there was no one who was able to answer the question the same way. If this was the final solution they came up with, then it was the answer that was resonant and that means I answered with the manner they needed to hear it, and then they're going to be drawn to working with me."

Finally, Becky finds herself networking (what she describes as an "old traditional method of marketing") and using that network to get in touch with potential customers.

"Getting out and speaking to my current network, and using old-fashioned in-person networking to meet new people... being able to speak to other people's audiences has been extremely beneficial, be it summits or just partnering with people," she says.

What do all these techniques for building audience common? They help Becky to maintain an enviable work-life harmony, which has become more important than ever for creators over the past few years.

3. Make sure you are in harmony with your family and work to grow a business that lasts

"It was like all of a sudden each business became an online company during the pandemic. And I think that resulted in this massive burnout" Becky recalls. "I'm getting it from several folks: We're just kind of burned out with the demands of running an online company."

Becky is focused on finding ways to grow her audience and company without detracting from her lifestyle that she's created and hopes to live a life she enjoys. "I have a family and I want to have an existence. I don't want my life being a constant creation of videos all day long."

"How do I make optimal choices to enable me to live my life while also growing my reach?"

Productivity and growth could be great things however, they shouldn't can be detrimental to your mental health.

"I would like to consider what I do with my time in the most efficient way, not because I want to get more done however, I desire to lead a fulfilling existence."

Let go of the 'shoulds' and build the business that's right for you

Becky helps her clients build businesses without burning out. She says that comes from years of getting that balance for herself.

Her company has come a long way since the first program she started in 2018. However, the core of her coaching -- helping others to let go of the'shoulds that's'shoulds' -- has remained constant in her content, products and approach to growth.
