Celebrate History and Embrace Progress: International Women's Day 2024
Each year, on the 8th of March, the world unites in celebration of International Women's Day (IWD). This day is a time to celebrate the remarkable achievements made by women, to reflect on their challenges as well as recommit to building a future where women are treated equally. As we look back, the day wasn't born over night. It's the culmination of struggle, determination, and unwavering determination. This is why we celebrate the day by encouraging all of you to participate when we embark on short journey through the long and rich history of IWD as a testimony to the effectiveness of collective action.
From Seeds of Change to a global Movement
The seeds for IWD were sown in the early 20th century. This was the time in which the struggle for women's equality was taking momentum. On March 8, 1857, women workers took to the streets in protest against low working conditions and a lack of conditions for women working in the textile industry. This strike called for a shorter work day and fair living wages. A few years later, on March 8 the march of women working in the needle trades was held to oppose child labor and the conditions of work in sweatshops as well as demand women's right to vote. A year later, in 1910 the date was changed to March 8th, which is now celebrated to be International Women's Day.
The Catalyst to Change
Throughout the 20th century, IWD served as a potent agent of changes. It became a platform where women could raise their voices on issues like the right to vote, fair work conditions and pay, and the right to access education. In 1975, IWD received recognition from the United Nations officially recognized IWD which affirmed the global importance of IWD.

A Day of Celebration and Action
Today, IWD is celebrated in numerous ways, from breathtaking parades to intimate gatherings. It's a time to recognize the pioneering women of every profession including artists and scientists to business owners and activists. However, IWD isn't only about celebration; it's a call to action. It reminds us that the fight for gender equality continues to be a struggle. It is imperative to continue to fight for equal opportunity, fight negative stereotypes and help empower women and girls all over the world. The focus for International Women's Day 2024 is " Invest in Women and Accelerating Change" with the globally popular hashtag #InvestInWomen.
As per the UN Five categories are crucial to moving forward the hashtag towards becoming obsolete:
- investing in women an issue of human rights:Time is running out. The issue of gender equality is the most pressing human rights issue, affecting everyone.
- Eliminating poverty In the wake of COVID pandemic and conflicts, 75 million more people have been forced into extreme in poverty as of in the year 2000. Immediate action is crucial to prevent over 342 million women and children living in poverty in 2030.
- Financial management that is gender responsive: Conflicts and rising prices could force 75% of nations to cut public spending until 2025. This will negatively impact women as well as their most essential services.
- Transitioning to a eco-friendly and caring societyThe economy currently disproportionately affects women. Proponents of a change to green economies and a care society in order to increase women's voices.
- The support of feminist changemakers: Despite leading efforts, feminist organizations receive only 0.13 percent of development assistance.
